The Beginning of Nike Air Max Shoes
Though Air cushioning was invented in 1979, it remained hidden in the midsole for eight years until it was finally showcased in the Nike Air Max 1 shoe. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, an architect by trade, was inspired by the Centre Pompidou building in Paris. The building exposed infrastructure typically hidden behind a façade, a statement that was both vulnerable and rebellious. After returning from France, Hatfield was motivated to carve out a piece of the midsole to reveal the Air cushioning.
While visible Air cushioning is now a commonplace feature in Nike shoes, at the time it was a controversial move to reveal the Air unit. Nike was afraid that customers would perceive the Air bubble as vulnerable, despite its tested durability. But Hatfield stuck to his sketches, and when the Air Max 1 hit the market, it began a legacy of rebellious designs.
Air Revolution
After the Air Max 1 came more beloved silhouettes like the Nike Air Max 90 and the Nike Air Max 180. But it wasn’t until 1995 that another Air Max would be released that could rival the Air Max 1’s fame. The Nike Air Max 95, designed by Sergio Lozano, quickly became a sneaker staple. Not only did it feature the first-ever forefoot Air cushioning, its unique, layered upper created an inimitable look that was like nothing the sneaker world had ever seen.
Just two years later, Nike made history again with the Nike Air Max 97 shoe. Inspired by Japan’s high-speed bullet trains, the Air Max 97 features a full-length visible Air unit and undulating lines that wrap around the upper for a one-of-a-kind design.
